Structural steel at the University of South Carolina’s new Health Sciences Campus is progressing nicely! This image shows one of the larger and heavier (39,000 pounds) beams on the project being set in place on August 21, 2025, spanning what will become the terraced classroom on the ground floor of the medical education wing of the building. Major Milestone Reached at USC Health Sciences Campus
The University of South Carolina’s Health Sciences Campus reached a major milestone on August 12, 2025 with the start of structural steel erection. The accompanying photos show progression from steel on the fabrication table to standing the first three columns in the field. Stay tuned for further updates as structural steel at the medical education wing of the building progresses and cast-in-place concrete at the research wing of the building nears completion!

USC New School of Medicine Goes Vertical

Deep Foundations Near Completion

As of now, deep foundations are nearing completion, marking a crucial phase in the project’s development. Looking ahead, concrete columns are set to begin construction next month, a major milestone that will bring the vision of this state-of-the-art health sciences hub closer to reality. Groundbreaking Celebration
School of Medicine Columbia breaks ground on new facility at USC Health Sciences Campus
Construction Commenced
Gilbane is excited to report that construction of the University of South Carolina's new School of Medicine Columbia has commenced, on schedule. On January 21, 2025, our site contractor, Taylor Brothers, mobilized to the site and quickly completed site clearing and demolition activities. As of February 21, 2025, the building pad is at subgrade and our deep foundation contractor, Keller, is in the process of installing test piles (see photo). In the coming months, auger cast piles will be installed as activities related to deep foundations unfold. Stay tuned for further updates!
